Anxiety disorders have many forms and the intensity of your anxiety can vary widely from person to person. Examples of anxiety disorders are generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder (anxiety of impending doom), obsessive-compulsive disorder (the fear of certain rituals or fears), specific phobias or separation anxiety disorder (a fear of being alone). You could have many more than one anxiety problem.

Some types of anxiety attacks are rapid and abrupt. Others may be gradual in their onset. When people experience anxiety they can experience muscle tension, increased heart rate, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and stomach area or trembling. Physical symptoms associated with anxiety include a pounding heart, sweating, shakiness, and nausea. You may also feel nauseated, bloated or lose your appetite.

There are a variety of possible causes for anxiety disorder. Two broad categories include biological and environmental factors. Biological factors include hereditary conditions including hyperactivity, bi-polar or hyperhidrosis and other brain vulnerabilities. They can include divorce, major life changes such as loss of a job or moving home.

Psychological or mental health issues can also lead to anxiety. Common symptoms include worry, unrealistic fear, irritability and guilt. They can also lead to panic attacks, which are brief and even irrational feelings of fear and concern that may not have any concrete cause.

Specific phobias can be related to a person’s history (i.e. they may have had a fear of going to school when they were children). Other specific phobias are usually a result of the individual’s personality.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common anxiety illness that develops after exposure to a traumatic event. This could be something as horrendous as being raped or being mugged. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can take many forms and manifests itself in a variety of ways. Some people develop physical symptoms related to their experience, while others may experience emotional symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares or the uncontrollable shaking of the body. People who suffer from PTSD may also experience long-term social, legal and financial complications.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, also known as GAD, is characterized by persistent and exaggerated worry and tension that interfere with everyday activities like sleeping, working or studying. Generalized Anxiety Disorders can interfere with relationships and can be very debilitating. Symptoms typically include muscle tension or twitching, headaches, dizziness and irritability. It can cause the sufferer to avoid social contact or develop unrealistic fears of certain situations. In severe cases, Generalized Anxiety Disorders may interfere with work and relationships and may require professional treatment.

With all anxiety conditions, it is important to keep in mind that there are natural cures and relaxation techniques. Using prescription medication for any condition should only be done under the strict supervision of a doctor. These medications are not intended to cure or medicate, they are for short term use. Using these types of medications can actually hinder recovery and should be avoided if at all possible. Another type of anxiety disorder is Panic Disorder. People who suffer from panic attacks have extreme symptoms that can include a rapid heart beat, chest pain, excessive sweating, tingling or numbness, dizziness and hot flashes. It is important to seek treatment for both anxiety disorders if you suffer from any symptoms.

You might be surprised to learn that the most successful way to control symptoms naturally is to change your diet. By making small changes to your diet, you can stop the fear before it starts and slowly overcome the anxiety and the panic attacks. Eating healthier can do many things for your health, including reducing stress.

Doctors aren’t sure why some people are more prone to anxiety disorders than others, but they do know what can make anxiety disorders worse. People who eat fast food and other unhealthy foods are more likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder than someone who eats a healthy diet. Diet can be changed by eating smaller meals more frequently and choosing healthier foods such as fruits and vegetables. Taking anti-anxiety medication doesn’t always solve the problem, but there are other ways to help people overcome the symptoms of anxiety disorders.
